A scholarship personal statement — also called a motivation letter or statement of purpose — is one of the most important parts of your scholarship application. 2. Your Background and Qualifications (1-2 paragraphs)
Summarise your most relevant academic and professional achievements. Be specific — use numbers, awards, and outcomes where possible.
Connect everything back to your goals. Don't just list achievements; explain what they taught you and how they prepared you.
3. Why This Scholarship and Programme (1 paragraph)
Show you have done your research. Mention:
- Specific modules, professors, or research groups at the university
- How the scholarship's values align with yours
- Why this particular award matters to you
This paragraph proves you are applying strategically, not just sending the same letter to every scholarship.
4. Your Future Goals and Impact (1-2 paragraphs)
Be specific about what you will do after graduating:
- What role or organisation will you work with?
- What specific problem will you address?
- How will your home community or country benefit?
Vague answers like "I will give back to my country" will not impress committees. Name the ministry, NGO, hospital, or company you plan to work with.
5. The Closing Paragraph
End with confidence. Reiterate your core message — who you are, what you will do, and why you are ready for this opportunity. Express gratitude without sounding desperate.

- Starting with "I was born in...": Jump straight into your story
